Cindy "CeBe" Barnes is a teenager experiencing the frustrations of living in a small town and the difficulties of adolescence. She is an outsider. A rebel. She idolizes Elvis Presley and repeats the aphorisms of the punk rock generation. Her trucker father, Don, has been absent for six years, serving time in prison. Her mother, Kathy, an insecure and weak-willed woman works as a waitress in a diner and is having an affair with the owner. She is also a junkie.

Angry and disillusioned, CeBe runs away and gets into trouble with the law. Finally, she agrees to return home as Don is about to be paroled. When that happens, Kathy promises they will be a happy family again. Instead, Don's return eventually brings CeBe's hidden nightmares into focus and triggers the recollection of her early sexual abuse. Her last hero is destroyed and events build rapidly to an intense climax. This is the story of a young girl's premature awakening into the ugly and incomprehensible adult world. And the terrifying consequences...
